Oto-Manguean is a large family of languages.

Most speakers live in Mexico today. These languages are very old. Some experts think they started 4,000 years ago. This makes them very important to study.

One special thing about these languages is tone. This means the pitch of a voice changes a word's meaning.

This is rare for languages in North America. Many of these groups are very diverse. This means they have many different ways of speaking.

In the state of Oaxaca, many people use these languages. The Zapotec and Mixtec branches are very large.

Almost 1.5 million people speak them there. Other groups, like the Otomi, live in central Mexico.

Some of these languages are in danger. For example, Ixcatec has fewer than 250 speakers. Most of those speakers are elderly. Other languages, like Chiapanec, are now extinct. This means no one speaks them anymore. We study them to learn about history.
