The Arab–Khazar wars were a long series of fights between two large powers.

One power was the Arab caliphates. These were growing empires led by Arab leaders. The other power was the Khazar Khaganate. The Khazars were a group of people living in the northern Caucasus. These wars happened in a place called the Caucasus region. This area has very tall mountains and important paths through them.

The fighting lasted for a very long time. It started around the year 642 and continued until 799 CE.

The wars happened because both sides wanted to control certain lands. The Arabs wanted to secure the South Caucasus. They also wanted to control the North Caucasus. The Khazars were already living in the north.

A very important place in these wars was the city of Derbent. Derbent sat along the Caspian Sea. It guarded a passage through the mountains. Because it was so important, the Arabs tried to capture it. Control of Derbent helped one side manage the mountain paths. This made the city a key part of the struggle.

Historians divide these wars into two main periods. The first period began around 642. It ended about ten years later in 652. During this time, Arab forces fought at the town of Balanjar.

After that, the large fighting stopped for many years. There were still small raids, but the big wars were over. The second major period started much later. It began around 722 and lasted until 737. This second part was much larger and more intense than the first.

Many leaders and soldiers took part in the fighting. In the year 730, the Khazars won a big battle at Ardabil. This battle was very important. During this fight, the Arab general al-Jarrah ibn Abdallah was killed.

Later, a leader named Marwan ibn Muhammad led a huge trip north. He went to the Khazar capital at Atil in the Volga Delta. He led this big expedition in the year 737. This campaign helped end the large-scale fighting between the two sides.

After the big wars ended, things changed for the people living there. The two sides stopped fighting as much. Instead, they began to trade with each other.

The Caucasus became a way for people to trade. It linked the Middle East to Eastern Europe. This helped different cultures connect. Even though small fights happened later, the era of huge wars was over. The region became a path for goods and ideas to move.
