It was ruled by the Scindia family, who belonged to the Hindu Maratha dynasty. This state was part of the Maratha Empire for a long time. Later, it became a princely state under British protection. The state was so important that it earned a 21-gun salute.

This means it was given high honors during ceremonies. The state eventually became part of the new Union of India in 1947.

The state was divided into two main sections. The first section was in the north. It was a solid block of land near the Chambal River.

The second section was called the Malwa section. This part included the city of Ujjain. The Malwa section was made of many smaller districts. These districts were spread out in a very complex way. The whole state had a huge area of land. In 1940, more than four million people lived there.

The history of this place goes back many centuries. Long ago, the area was part of the Delhi Sultanate. Later, the Tomar rulers controlled the region. A famous ruler named Man Singh Tomar built many monuments in the Gwalior fort.

After the Tomars, the Mughals ruled until 1731. Then, the Scindia family began their own rule. Ranoji Scindia founded the ruling house in the early 18th century. He was a commander for the Peshwa Bajirao I.

One of the most powerful leaders was Mahadji Sindhia. He ruled from 1761 to 1794. Mahadji helped shape the history of all of India. He used a clever man named Benoît de Boigne to build a strong army. De Boigne helped grow the army into three large brigades.

With this force, Mahadji became a leader in Northern India. He even helped put the Mughal emperor, Shah Alam II, back on his throne in Delhi. This made the Scindia family very influential during his lifetime.

After Mahadji died, Daulat Rao Sindhia became the leader. He was only 15 years old when he took power. His time as a ruler was often difficult. There were many fights between different groups in Central India. The British also fought wars against the Scindia forces.

After these wars, the British became the main power in the area. Gwalior became a princely state under British supervision. This changed how the land was governed for many years. Eventually, the state joined the new nation of India.
