Later, a leader named Mahadji became very powerful. He helped rule much of Northern India. He even helped put the Mughal emperor back on his throne. During this time, the state grew very strong.

After Mahadji, Daulat Rao became the leader. He was only 15 years old when he took power.

His rule was a hard time. There were many fights between different groups. Eventually, the British fought with the Scindia forces. The British won these wars. This changed how the land was run. Gwalior became a princely state under British protection.

The state had two main parts. One part was in the north. The other part was the Malwa section. In 1947, India became independent. The Scindia rulers joined the new Union of India. Gwalior then became part of a new Indian state.
