It began in 1799 when a leader named Ranjit Singh took Lahore. He was a man who rose to power very fast. He united many smaller groups called misls. These misls were groups of Sikh armies.

Ranjit Singh was crowned in 1801. He made his army very modern. He used new weapons and training. Under his rule, the empire grew very big. It reached from Tibet in the north to Sindh in the south. It also went from the Khyber Pass to the Sutlej River.

A famous general named Hari Singh Nalwa helped the empire grow. He led the army to many new places. After Ranjit Singh died in 1839, the empire became weak. The British East India Company fought the Sikhs in a war. In 1849, the British took over the land. This was the last major area the British took in that region.
