They established semi-autonomous states ruled by families like the Holkars of Indore and the Scindias of Gwalior. The British eventually conquered the region following the Third Anglo-Maratha War, organizing it into the Central Provinces and Berar.
The modern political boundaries of Madhya Pradesh were formed through several reorganizations. After India gained independence, the Central Provinces and Berar were renamed Madhya Pradesh, with Nagpur as the capital.
