Zenobia was a famous queen who ruled a large empire in the third century.

She lived in the city of Palmyra, which is in the country we now call Syria. Zenobia was a very smart and cultured leader. Her court was a place where scholars and thinkers could meet. She was also known for being kind to people with different religious beliefs. This helped her rule over many different groups of people.

Her rise to power began through her marriage to a man named Odaenathus. In the year 260, Odaenathus became the king of Palmyra. He helped keep the peace in the Roman East by defeating the Sasanian Empire of Persia.

When Odaenathus was killed in 267, Zenobia took charge for her son, Vaballathus. She acted as a regent, which means she ruled on his behalf. She held the real power during his reign from 267 to 272.

Zenobia was a very ambitious ruler who wanted to expand her lands. In the year 270, she led an invasion to take more territory. This move brought most of the Roman East under her control.

Her empire eventually included Egypt and reached from Anatolia to Upper Egypt. By the middle of 271, her realm was very large. Even though she was powerful, she was still technically part of the Roman system at first.

Things changed when the Roman emperor Aurelian began a campaign against her. In response, Zenobia declared her son to be an emperor. She also took the title of empress for herself.

This was a way of saying Palmyra was independent from Rome. This decision led to heavy fighting between the Palmyrene forces and the Roman army. The Romans were eventually victorious in this conflict.

In late 272, the Roman army captured Zenobia in her capital city. The Romans sent her to live in Rome for the rest of her life.
