She was the only woman to ever rule China as an emperor. This means she held the highest power in the land. Most rulers in China were men, so her leadership was very unusual. She lived during a time of great change for the country. Her life shows how much one person can change a whole empire.

Her path to power happened in many slow steps. First, she served as a lady in the palace for Emperor Taizong. After he died, she married his son, Emperor Gaozong. She became his empress consort, which is the wife of the emperor. Later, she acted as a ruler while her sons were too young to lead. Eventually, she took full control of the government herself.

Wu Zetian was born Wu Zhao into a well-off family. Her father, Wu Shiyue, worked in the timber business. Her parents encouraged her to study many subjects. She learned about music, history, and even how to run a government. This was very rare for girls during that time. At age 14, she entered the imperial palace to serve the emperor.

In the year 690, Wu did something that had never been done before. She started her own dynasty called the Zhou dynasty. This replaced the Tang dynasty for a short time. She took the title of imperial supreme ruler, or huangdi. She even created new ways to write her name.

During her rule, she changed how the government worked. She used tests to make sure the best people got important jobs.

Wu's time as a ruler was part of a great era for China. This period is often called the High Tang because the country was very strong. She supported the arts and the religion of Buddhism. She even helped build huge things like the Longmen Grottoes.

In the end, a group of leaders removed her from power. The Tang dynasty came back, and she died a few months later.
