Things changed in 1762 during the Seven Years' War. Great Britain declared war on Spain and took Manila. Diego used this time to start a revolt. He wanted local leaders to replace Spanish officials. Gabriela became his closest advisor during this fight. She helped him work with the British to gain power.

Diego was killed in Vigan on May 28, 1763. Two men, Miguel Vicos and Pedro Becbec, killed him. Gabriela did not give up after his death. She fled to Tayum to stay with her uncle, Nicolás Cariño. She became the new commander of the rebel troops. People called her "La Generala" because she led on horseback. On September 10, 1763, she tried to attack Vigan. The Spanish fought back and eventually captured her in Abra. She was executed by hanging on September 20, 1763.

Many things in the world honor her memory now.
