The Katipunan grew very quickly in 1896. It went from 300 members to 40,000 members by August. This growth made the Spanish authorities very suspicious. In August 1896, the Spanish authorities found out about the secret group. Many people were arrested for treason. Bonifacio called for a mass gathering in Caloocan. During this event, people tore up their identity documents. This was called the Cry of Balintawak or the Cry of Pugad Lawin.
