Ahmednagar, officially renamed Ahilyanagar, is a significant city in Maharashtra, India. It serves as the headquarters for the Ahmednagar district. The city is located in a region known as a rain shadow. This means it sits behind the Western Ghats mountains. Because of this position, the area receives very little rainfall. The climate is classified as hot semi-arid. It stays hot throughout the entire year. The months from March to mid-June are especially sweltering.

The city was founded in 1494 by Ahmad Nizam Shah I. He established the town on the site of an older city called Bhingar. This occurred after the breakup of the Bahmani Sultanate. Ahmad founded the Nizam Shahi dynasty in this location. Historical accounts describe the city as a very carefully planned place. Architects and surveyors followed the king's specific commands. They built palaces, houses, squares, and shops. They also designed fair gardens around the city. One chronicler named Firishta claimed the city rivaled Baghdad and Cairo in splendor.

Later, the last Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, spent his final years in the Deccan. He died in Ahmednagar in 1707 and is buried at nearby Khuldabad. In the late 1700s, the Marathas gained control of the area. The British military besieged and captured the city in 1803. By 1817, the British held the city under the Treaty of Poona. During the 19th century, American missionaries introduced modern schooling. Cynthia Farrar ran girls' schools that were among the first in India. Her work inspired reformers like Mahatma Jyotirao Phule.
