It sits in the Niigata Prefecture. Sado is the sixth largest island in the country.

The island has two rows of mountains. These mountains run from the southwest to the northeast. A flat area called the Kuninaka plain sits between them. Most people live on this plain.

Sado has a long and interesting history. Long ago, the island was a place for exile. This was a very serious punishment. People were sent there and could not return.

Later, people found gold on the island in 1601. This made the island very busy. The gold mines were very important for a long time.

Today, many people visit Sado for its beauty. You can see old temples and ruins. The island is also a home for the Japanese crested ibis.
