The city is at the foot of Mount Akagi. It is also near Mount Haruna and Mount Myōgi. Two rivers run through the city. One is the Tone River. It is the second-longest river in Japan. The other is the Hirose River.

Maebashi is a sunny place. It gets over 2,210 hours of sunshine each year. In winter, a dry wind blows from the north. This wind is called the karakkaze. In summer, the weather can be very hot. In 2001, the city hit a very high temperature. It was the fifth-hottest ever recorded in Japan.

People call Maebashi the "City of Water, Greenery and Poets." This is because of its pure water and rich nature. Many famous poets lived here too. One was a poet named Sakutarō Hagiwara. The city is far from the sea. In fact, it is the farthest capital city from the ocean in Japan.
