It is the capital of Yamagata Prefecture. The city sits in a wide valley. To the east, the big Ōu Mountains rise up. The city also includes Mount Zaō. A river called the Mamigasaki flows through the town.

The weather changes a lot during the year. Summers are warm and often humid. Winters are very cold and snowy. In fact, Yamagata is a heavy snow area. This makes it a famous place for skiing.

People in Yamagata love food. They eat more ramen than almost anywhere else in Japan. In the autumn, they have a big party. They cook taro potatoes and meat in a giant pot. Sometimes, a crane helps serve the food to the crowds!

There are many fun places to visit. You can see the old walls of Kajo Park. You can also visit the Yamagata Museum of Art. The city has many schools and universities too.
