Awaji is the largest island in the Seto Inland Sea. It is a very important link between the larger lands.

Getting to the island is quite easy now. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connects Awaji to Kobe on Honshū. This bridge opened on April 5, 1998. It is the second longest suspension bridge in the world. People use the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway to travel across the island. This road is the main land path between Honshū and Shikoku. The Naruto whirlpools also form in the strait near Naruto.

Many old stories tell us about Awaji. In Shinto myths, it was the first island born from the gods Izanagi and Izanami. Some scholars say the name means "the road to" a historic province. Others think the name comes from the word for millet. This is from a story about the god Sukunabikona. In very old books, the island has different names. It was even its own province from the 7th to the 19th century.

There are many interesting things to see and do. You can watch Awaji Ningyō Jōruri puppet theater. This tradition is over 500 years old. It is performed daily at the Awaji Puppet Museum in Minamiawaji. You might also see Awaji ware pottery. A man named Minpei started making this pottery in the 1830s. The architect Tadao Ando also designed buildings like the Awaji Yumebutai complex.

Nature has also shaped the island in big ways. The Nojima Fault runs across the land. This fault caused the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995. That earthquake was very strong and killed over 5,500 people. The Nojima Fault is now a national natural monument. You can visit the Nojima Fault Preservation Museum to see it. The museum shows how the ground movement cut through roads and hedges.
