The history of this city is very long and deep. It is one of the oldest places where people have lived in South Asia. Records show people lived there since at least the sixth century BC. Long ago, it was a main city of the ancient Gandhara region. In the second century CE, it was the capital for the Kushan Empire. At that time, the city was huge for its era. It had about 120,000 people living there.

Many different groups have ruled the city through the ages. The Ghaznavids took control of the city in 1001 CE. Later, the Mughal Empire used it as a major trading center. From 1776, it was even the winter capital for the Durrani Empire. In 1849, the East India Company captured the city. This meant it became part of the British Raj. After the Partition of British India in 1947, it became part of Pakistan.

Even though many old monuments were damaged by wars, the city remains a major center for culture and politics.

The way people speak in Peshawar has changed over time. For a long time, most people spoke a language called Hindko. This was the main way people talked during the colonial years. However, many people moved to the city from nearby rural areas. Many Afghan refugees also came to live there after the Soviet-Afghan War. Because of these changes, most people in Peshawar now speak Pashto.
