People often call Quetta the "Fruit Garden of Pakistan." This is because the area has many fruit orchards. You can find many types of fresh and dried fruits there. The city is also a very busy place for trade. It sits near the border with Afghanistan. It is close to the road that goes to Kandahar.

This helps people move goods between the two countries. It is also near the Bolan Pass. This pass was once a major way to travel between Central Asia and South Asia.

The name Quetta comes from a Pashto word meaning "fortress." This refers to how the valley is easy to defend. Long ago, the area had a mud-walled fort called Miri Fort. The valley was once known as Shal. It was the home of Pashtun tribes like the Kasi. These tribes were the main farmers and landholders. They used special irrigation systems called karez to water their crops.

History shows that many different groups have ruled this land. In the 1100s, Mahmud of Ghazni captured the valley. Later, the Mughal emperor Humayun passed through in 1543. In 1709, the Afghan Hotak dynasty took control. By 1747, it was part of the Durrani Empire. Later, the British arrived and occupied the city. In 1883, they made a formal lease to rule the area. They built a large military station and new roads there.

Life in Quetta has changed a lot over time. In 1935, a very large earthquake hit the city. It destroyed almost everything and many people died. The city had to be rebuilt with new plans. Today, the city is very diverse with many different groups. You can find Pashtun, Baloch, Hazara, and many other people living together.
