The city has a very long and changing history. Long ago, a leader named Alexander fought a battle here in 326 BC. After Alexander, many different groups ruled the land. These included the Mauryan Empire and the Indo-Greek Kingdom. Later, the Kushan Empire brought a time of prosperity and Buddhism. The area also saw the rule of the Alchon Huns. Even the name Alakhana might come from these Huns. This history makes the city a place of many ancient sites.

Many famous rulers helped shape the city over time. In the 16th century, the area was called Khwaspur. The Mughal Emperor Akbar helped develop the city further. He built the famous Gujrat Fort during his reign. The Gujjar people were allowed to settle inside this fort. Later, the city was part of a route for Mughal families. They used this path when they traveled to visit Kashmir. The city even had a wall with five large gates.

Today, Gujrat is a large and growing city. In 2023, the urban population reached 574,240 people. Most people living there speak Punjabi. About 90.43% of the people use this language. Some people also speak Urdu or Pashto. The city is home to many schools and colleges. You can find the University of Gujrat here.
