The city sat right where the Amu Darya and Kokcha rivers meet. This location was great for farming because of the water. The city was split into two main parts. There was a lower town for many people. There was also a high part called an acropolis.

It was a very important place for trade and soldiers.

The city grew in stages over many years. It likely began between 300 and 285 BC. This was during the time of the Seleucid Empire. Early leaders like Seleucus I Nicator or Antiochus I Soter probably ordered its start. The city had strong walls to keep people safe. These fortifications were always being fixed and made better. A mint was also built there to make coins.

This helped the city grow even more.

Many different rulers changed how the city worked. At first, it was a center for the Seleucid Empire. Later, a new group called the Greco-Bactrians took control. They were led by a man named Diodotus I. The city became a place for soldiers for a while. Later, kings like Euthydemus I and Demetrius I helped it grow again. They even moved into the northwest Indian subcontinent. The city's culture became very rich during these times.

The city was at its best under King Eucratides I. He lived in the middle of the second century BC. He might have even renamed the city Eucratideia.
