Arg-e Bam

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Arg-e Bam is a very special place in southeastern Iran. It is located in the city of Bam in Kerman province. This massive structure is a huge fortress known as a citadel. Before a major event in 2003, it was likely the largest adobe building in the world. Adobe is a type of brick made from clay that is dried in the sun.

The citadel was a very important center for many different people. It was part of a special area called the Bam and its Cultural Landscape. UNESCO has listed this site as a World Heritage Site to protect it.

The citadel was built in several different parts over a long time. It had four main sections for different uses. These included a place where people lived, stables for animals, army barracks, and a home for the governor. The citadel also had 38 watchtowers to keep lookouts. There were four large entrance gates to let people in. A deep moat surrounded the outer defense wall to keep the city safe.

The governor's quarters sat high on a rocky hill for a better view.

This site has a history that stretches back many centuries. Some experts believe it traces back to the Achaemenid Empire. This was a very old empire from the sixth to fourth centuries BC. Later, during the Parthian era, the fort was expanded into the Arg-e Bam we know. Between 224 and 637 AD, new walls were built under the Sassanids. In the 10th century, Islamic writers described Bam as a busy marketplace. It was a famous place for beautiful cotton fabrics and many palm trees.

Bam was a very important stop on the famous Silk Road. This was a path used for trading goods between different lands. The city was a major center for the silk and cotton industries. People grew silkworms there to make fine silk garments. The city also sat on a strategic spice route. This helped the city grow wealthy and busy with traders.

Because of its location, many different groups of people ruled the area over time.

On December 26, 2003, a very strong earthquake hit the city. The earthquake happened at 5:26 am and had a magnitude of 6.6. It was very destructive and destroyed about 70% of the buildings. Many people were hurt, and many others lost their homes. The citadel was almost completely destroyed by the shaking ground. However, the President of Iran, Mohammad Khatami, promised to rebuild it.

Today, people work to restore this amazing piece of history.
