It is one of the best-preserved castles from the Middle Ages in the world. The castle sits high on a hill in the Homs Gap. This location was very important for watching the roads below. It sits near the border of Lebanon and the city of Homs. Because it sits on a high limestone peak, it was a very strong defensive site.

The castle's design is very special to look at. It is a concentric castle, which means it has layers of walls.

The builders made an inner court and then added a large outer wall. This design helped protect the people inside from attackers. The space between the walls is quite narrow. This layout made the castle very hard to capture. It was built to be a military base and a center for running the land.

The history of this place began long ago in the 11th century.

First, Kurdish troops lived there under the Mirdasid rulers. They called the site the "Fortress of the Kurds." In 1142, the Knights Hospitaller took control of the castle. These knights were a religious group that originally cared for sick people. They began rebuilding the castle to make it much stronger. They worked on it until an earthquake hit in 1170.

The 13th century was a "golden age" for the castle.

During this time, about 2,000 soldiers lived inside the walls. This large group helped the knights control the area around them. They even collected tribute from nearby places. However, things changed in 1271 when the Mamluk Sultanate arrived. They captured the castle after a siege that lasted 36 days. Some stories say they used a fake letter to make the knights surrender.

Today, many people visit the castle to learn about the past.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means it is protected. The castle was damaged during the Syrian civil war. Syrian government forces took control of it again in 2014. Since then, workers have started to fix and save the stone walls. The village of al-Husn sits right next to the castle today. It has nearly 9,000 people living in it.
