Today, the ruins are a special UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Life in Ephesus changed many times over thousands of years.

First, people lived in the area during the Neolithic Age. Around 6000 BC, humans began inhabiting the land nearby. Later, Greek colonists built the city in the 10th century BC. They settled on a place called Ayasuluk Hill. The city moved several times as the land changed. This happened because a river moved silt into the harbor. This silt made the water shallow and blocked the port.

Many great leaders and groups shaped the history of the city.

A prince named Androklos is a legendary founder of the city. He was a successful warrior and a king. Later, the Persian Empire took control of the Greek cities. The Ephesians even fought in the Ionian Revolt in 498 BC. Eventually, the Roman Republic took control in 129 BC. The city grew very large and wealthy under Roman rule. It became a major center for the whole region.
