Herostratus is a name that carries a heavy meaning in history. He was a man who committed a crime to become famous. This act was not for money or power. He simply wanted people to remember his name forever. Because of this, his name is now used to describe someone who seeks fame through bad deeds.

This idea is sometimes called "Herostratic fame."

His crime happened in 356 BCE at a place called Ephesus. This city is located near modern-day Selçuk in Turkey. He burned down the Temple of Artemis during this time. The temple was a massive and beautiful building made mostly of marble. It was so grand that it was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The temple was built over 120 years and was even larger than the Parthenon.

We do not know many details about Herostratus' life. Historians are not sure if he was a citizen of Ephesus or a slave. They also do not know his exact job or his family. After he burned the temple, he was quickly caught by the authorities. He was punished and then executed. During this time, he confessed that his goal was to gain lasting notoriety.

The leaders of Ephesus were so angry that they passed a law to ban his name.

This law was meant to erase him from history, but it did not work. Many writers from that time still recorded his name in their books. Over hundreds of years, many famous authors used his story in their work. Writers like Geoffrey Chaucer and Jean-Paul Sartre have discussed him. Some stories even turn him into a fictional character to explore why people want attention.

His name survived through the ages despite the attempt to hide it.

Today, scholars look at his actions in a new way. Some compare his crime to modern acts of terrorism. These are acts meant to shock the world and gain attention through fear. Examples include people who target important symbols to get media coverage. Like Herostratus, these individuals often want to be known by everyone.
