It serves as the center for the Denizli province. The city is split between two districts named Merkezefendi and Pamukkale. In the year 2024, the population was 691,783 people. The name "deniz" actually means sea or a large lake. However, you will not find a sea or lake near the city. The name changed long ago from a word meaning wild boar. This was done to avoid using a word that could be offensive.

Many people visit the area to see amazing natural sights. Pamukkale is a very famous place with mineral-coated hillsides.

Just north of Pamukkale, the town of Karahayıt has hotels with red thermal water. Many other districts like Sarayköy and Akköy also have warm spring waters. These thermal waters make the region a top place for tourism. The weather stays hot and dry during the summer months. In the winter, it can get very cold with snow. Sometimes, snow even falls right inside the urban areas.

History lives all around the city in many old ruins. To the north, you can find the ancient city of Hierapolis.

A king named Eumenes II founded it in 190 BC. Nearby is Laodicea, which was once a busy Greek town. This city was famous for making beautiful cotton and woolen cloths. A letter from long ago shows that people there felt very happy. You can still see an amphitheatre and an aqueduct there today. Other old sites include the city of Colossae near Honaz.

Making things is a huge part of how the city works. For many years, Denizli has grown by making and selling textiles. This textile industry is a very important symbol for the province. In the past, people even mined a mineral called chromium here. The city also has a large railway station for travel.

You can also use a cableway or a nearby airport. The airport at Çardak is about a 45-minute drive away. Many trucks travel the busy roads to move goods around.

Denizli connects to the rest of the world in many ways. It has many sister cities in far-off lands. These include cities in China, South Korea, and the Netherlands. Local builders use special stones like marble and travertine for buildings. This stone comes from the local land and looks very nice. People also enjoy visiting Honaz mountain for picnics in the summer. Some travelers like to eat local food like çöp şiş kebab. The city is a place where old history meets modern life.
