People come from many places to visit this event. The city has been a center for trade for much of its history. It sits in a great spot at the head of a deep gulf. This location helped it become a key mercantile city in the Mediterranean Sea.

İzmir has a very long history of people living there. Some records show 3,000 years of urban life. However, humans have lived in this area for up to 8,500 years.

This long past began during the Neolithic period. Archaeologists found very old sites at Yeşilova Höyük. These sites show people lived there between the 7th and 4th millennium BC. As the sea moved away over time, the area was used as a cemetery. Many graves from 3000 BC were found there.

In ancient times, the city was known by other names. Many people called it Smyrna.

This name was used in English until around 1930. At that time, the government helped change names to their Turkish forms. One old name found on tablets was Ti-smurna. Some people think the name might come from an Amazon named Smyrna. Others think it comes from a plant called myrrh. This plant produces a scented resin that the city used to export.

Many different groups have lived in and ruled İzmir. The Greeks lived there, and there was a large Greek population until 1923.
