In the northwest, the Turkish Straits connect the seas. The Sea of Marmara helps link the Black Sea to the Aegean. This water also separates Anatolia from Thrace in Europe. The land stretches far to the east toward the Armenian Highlands.

Long ago, Anatolia was a very important place for early humans. It was an early center for the development of farming. This happened after farming began in the nearby Fertile Crescent. Around 9,000 years ago, farmers from Anatolia moved into Europe. Their descendants eventually lived as far west as the British Isles.

Ancient sites like Göbekli Tepe show how people lived long ago. Another famous settlement was Çatalhöyük, which was very advanced. These early people helped change how the world grew food. This movement of people helped spread new ways of living.

Many different groups of people have lived in Anatolia throughout history. The Hattians were among the earliest recorded inhabitants. Later, Indo-European peoples arrived and spoke languages like Hittite and Lydian.

Other groups included the Phrygians, Lydians, and even the Celts in Galatia. Many Greek tribes, such as the Ionians and Dorians, also lived there. During the Roman and Byzantine periods, the Greek language was very common. Later, the Seljuk Turks arrived in the late 11th century. This began a long change in the culture and language of the land.

Today, Anatolia is a place where many cultures meet. While the Turkish language is most common, other languages are still spoken. You might hear Arabic, Kurdish, or Greek in different areas.
