Finding out who wrote the book is a big mystery. Some traditions say a man named Chanakya wrote it. He was a famous advisor to a leader named Chandragupta Maurya. The text also uses the names Kautilya and Vishnugupta. However, many modern experts believe many people wrote it over a long time. They think the book grew in layers from the 2nd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. The writing styles change in different parts of the book. This suggests that many authors added their own ideas over many years.

The book has a very specific way it is organized. It is divided into 15 books and 150 chapters. These chapters cover 180 different topics. The topics are numbered one after another without starting over. Most of the book is written in prose, which is regular writing. But each chapter ends with a poetic verse. This verse acts like a signal that the section is finishing. The largest book in the collection has 1,285 sentences. The smallest book has only 56 sentences. The whole text contains about 5,300 sentences in total.

For a long time, people thought this book was lost forever. It disappeared from view around the 12th century. Then, a man named R. Shamasastry found a manuscript in 1905. He published the text so the world could read it again. He also made the first English translation in 1915. Since then, many smart people have worked to study and translate it. Some found fragments of the text in old monasteries in China and Pakistan. Today, the Arthashastra helps us understand how people lived and led long ago.
