The city has a very long and complex history. Some believe it was once the city of Sagala. Sagala was the capital of the Madra kingdom. This ancient kingdom was destroyed by Alexander the Great in 326 BCE. The city was later rebuilt by the Indo-Greek king Menander I. He made it his capital in the 2nd century BCE. During this time, the city was a famous center for silk trade. It was also a place where many people studied Buddhist thought.

Many different groups have ruled Sialkot over the years. Around 460 CE, the Alchon Huns invaded the region. They made Sialkot a major center for their empire. Later, the city became a political center for North Punjab. Around the year 1000, the nearby city of Lahore became more important. Sialkot then became part of the medieval Sultanate of Delhi. In the 13th century, a saint named Imam Ali-ul-Haq arrived from Arabia. His work helped many people in the region convert to Islam. This changed the city into a largely Muslim place.

During the Mughal Empire, Sialkot became a place for learning. The city was famous for making high-quality paper. This paper was very white and strong. Because paper was easy to find, many scholars came to study there. The city also made metal weapons for the Mughal crown. A famous poet named Muhammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot.
