The city is the third-most populous place in the whole country. It is also a very important center for making things and trading goods. Because it has many roads, rails, and an airport, it connects many different places.

This city was built to be a planned settlement. In the 1890s, leaders started an irrigation scheme to grow crops. They used canals to bring water to the dry land. One of these, the lower Chenab canal, provides water to 80% of the farms nearby. The city center was designed in a special way. It looks like the Union Jack flag. Eight roads spread out from a large clock tower in the middle. These roads lead to eight different markets, or bazaars.

Long ago, the city had a different name. It was called Lyallpur, named after Sir James Broadwood Lyall. He was a leader in the Punjab at that time. The main buildings were designed by an architect named Ganga Ram. In 1947, the area went through a big change called Partition. This was when British India was split into two new countries. Many people moved to the city during this time. Later, in 1979, the government renamed the city Faisalabad. They chose this name to honor King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.

Faisalabad is a very important place for the economy. It is known as the "Manchester of Pakistan" because it makes so much cloth. This is called the textile industry. In 2013, the city's GDP was estimated at $43 billion. This means the value of everything made there was very high. The city contributes more than 20 percent to the total GDP of Pakistan. Agriculture and industry are the two main ways people work here.

The weather in Faisalabad can be very extreme. In the summer, temperatures can reach as high as 48.0 °C. In the winter, it can get as cold as −4.0 °C. The city has a monsoon season from July to September. This season brings heavy rain that can cause flash flooding. However, this rain is very important for the crops. The soil in this area is made of silt and fine sand. This makes the land very good for farming.
