It serves as the capital of Ondo State. The city sits within the tropical rainforest zone of the country. Geographically, it is positioned southwest of Abuja and north of Lagos State. Akure acts as a vital hub for the surrounding region. It is a center for trade, government, and education. The city's population has grown significantly over the years. A census in 2006 recorded 403,000 residents. Current estimates suggest the population is now approximately 774,000 people.

History in this area reaches back many thousands of years. Researchers discovered the oldest Homo sapiens fossil in West Africa near Akure. This fossil dates back roughly 11,000 years. Scientists also found rock engravings from the Mesolithic period on the city's outskirts. The Akure Kingdom is one of sixteen ancient Ekiti kingdoms. Oral traditions state that a person named Alakure originally founded the area. Later, Omoremilekun Asodeboyede established the modern dynasty. He was a descendant of Oduduwa, a ruler from Ile-Ife. Asodeboyede arrived after passing a strict test from Oduduwa. He eventually founded the city after conquering the Alakure.

The political and cultural heart of the city is the Deji's palace. The Deji is the title given to the King of Akure. The original palace was constructed in 1150 AD.

This historic site is a declared national monument. The palace contains over 16 unique courtyards, known as ùà. Each courtyard serves a specific social or religious purpose. For example, Ùà Lílá acts as a town hall. Ùà Ùkómọ is used for naming ceremonies. Other areas, like Ùà Ameshe, were used for punishing criminals. The Oba's Market, or Oja Oba, is located very close to these grounds.

Akure's identity is closely tied to the leopard. The leopard is the official totem of the city. This connection comes from the first king, Omoremilekun. His regnal name was Ekun, which means leopard. Because of this, descendants of the Akure clan are often called Omo Ekun. The King is supported by six high chiefs known as Iwarefa. In the past, Akure, Isinkan, and Isolo were separate communities. They moved closer together due to wars with the Benin Empire. Today, they occupy their current positions near one another. The rulers of Isinkan and Isolo are the Iralepo and the Osolo.

The economy of Akure relies heavily on its surrounding agricultural landscape. The city is a primary trading avenue for many farming regions. Farmers grow important crops like cocoa, yam, cassava, and maize. They also produce tobacco and cotton. Cotton is specifically used to weave various cloths. Grains such as rice, beans, and millet are common carbohydrate sources. The city also supports a large media sector. There are two television stations and eight radio stations operating in the area. These include NTA Akure and Ondo State Television.

The climate in Akure is tropical and humid. It features two distinct seasons: the wet season and the dry season. The average annual temperature is 25.8 °C. The hottest month is typically March, with average highs of 30.5 °C. The coolest month is August, with average lows of 20.5 °C. Rainfall is quite heavy during the rainy season. This season lasts about 9.6 months, from February to November. September is the wettest month, averaging 228.6 mm of rain. Conversely, January is the driest month of the year.
