Population growth in Lagos is incredibly rapid and sometimes controversial. Estimates for the population vary between different groups. In 2006, the federal census counted about 9 million people. However, the Lagos State Government disputed this number. They released data suggesting the metropolitan area had 16 million residents. Recent estimates suggest the greater Lagos area may have reached 28 million people by 2022.
