geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Borno is a large state located in the North-East part of Nigeria. It is a very special place because it borders three different countries. To the north, it touches Niger. To the east, it borders Cameroon. In the northeast, it shares a border with Chad.

Within Nigeria, Borno sits near Yobe, Gombe, and Adamawa. It is the second largest state in the whole country. Even though it is huge, it is the eleventh most crowded state. About 5.86 million people lived there in 2016.

The land in Borno looks very different depending on where you stand. In the north, the ground is a dry semi-desert called the Sahelian savanna. Moving toward the center and south, the land becomes a greener West Sudanian savanna.

You can also find the high Mandara Plateau in the southeast. In the far northeast, the Yobe River flows into Lake Chad. The Chad Basin National Park is located in the center. This park is home to monkeys, hyenas, and antelope. Large herds of African bush elephants also travel through this area.

Borno has a history that stretches back for many centuries. Long ago, the area was part of the Kanem Empire. This empire was very large and reached into parts of Libya and Chad. In the late 1300s, the empire became the Bornu Empire. It stayed strong and ruled the region for about 500 years. Later, a leader named Rabih az-Zubayr conquered the empire in 1893. Eventually, the land was divided between the British and German empires. The modern state we know today was formed in 1976.

Many different groups of people call Borno home. The Kanuri and Shuwa Arabs live in the north and center. In the south, you can find groups like the Waja and Margi.

Most people in the state, about 85 percent, are Muslim. There are also smaller groups of Christians and traditionalists. The capital city is Maiduguri, which is a busy center for trade. Many people in rural areas work with crops and livestock. The state has many schools and universities for students to learn.

Life in Borno has faced some very hard times recently. Since 2009, a group called Boko Haram has caused much trouble. This conflict forced millions of people to leave their homes. It also made it hard for farmers to grow food. However, things began to change after 2016 as the fighting slowed down. Development is now starting to renew in the area. People are working to rebuild their lives and their communities. The history and the people of Borno continue to shape the region.
