The island has a very dry climate. It stays warm and sunny all year long. This weather makes it a popular place for travelers. A small island called Klein Bonaire sits just west of the main island.

Klein Bonaire is not lived in by people. It has white sandy beaches and low plants like cactus. There are also some palm trees near the water. The reefs and beaches are all part of a protected area. The Bonaire National Marine Park helps look after these places.

The Spanish stayed for about one hundred years. They even brought animals like cows and goats to the island.

Different groups have ruled Bonaire over time. The Dutch took control of the island in 1636.
