The island's landscape is shaped by its volcanic roots. It is surrounded by many small, uninhabited islands. Some of these are named Île Fourchue or Île Coco.

Many beaches line the coast, and there are about 22 of them. Some beaches are on the leeward side where waters are calm. Others are on the windward side where the wind is stronger.

These windward beaches are great for windsurfing. The sea is very rich with coral reefs and marine life. Because of this, the area has been protected since 1996.

The history of the island is quite unique. Christopher Columbus first saw the island in 1493. He named it after Bartholomew the Apostle.

During this time, the capital Gustavia became a busy free port. After a vote in 1877, the island returned to French rule.
