Rivera's life moved through many big changes. He started as a rancher. In 1810, he joined the army of José Gervasio Artigas. Later, he became a general. He fought to help free the land known as Banda Oriental. This land was under the rule of Brazil at that time.

He fought in many battles, like the Battle of Rincón. He also fought in the Battle of Sarandí.

History shows how Rivera and other leaders often disagreed. In 1825, he met a leader named Juan Antonio Lavalleja. They had a famous meeting called the Abrazo del Monzón. Later, they had many arguments about how to lead. Rivera became the first President from November 1830 to October 1834. He even survived an attempt to remove him from power in 1832. He later supported Manuel Oribe to be the next president.

Conflict between leaders led to famous political colors. In 1838, Rivera defeated Oribe in a fight. This fight caused a big split in the country. Rivera's supporters wore red armbands. Oribe's supporters wore white armbands.
