Lidia's life began in the village of Chernavka. She was born in 1900 to a peasant family. Her parents both died when she was only five years old. Because of this, she lived in an orphanage for a long time. Later, she worked in a furniture factory. An owner heard her singing at her job. He told her to study music at the Saratov Conservatory.

Lidia faced very hard times after the war. In 1950, she was sent to a labor camp for ten years. This happened after her husband, Vladimir Kryukov, was arrested. She refused to say that her husband was guilty of a crime. Even in prison, she was a star to the other people there. She was eventually moved to a cell in the Vladimirsky Tsentral.
