He also made many portraits of famous writers and artists. He was close friends with the writer Leo Tolstoy. People remember him because his work captured the spirit of his time.

Repin learned to paint by working with others. When he was thirteen, he worked with an icon painter. Icons are religious pictures used in churches. At sixteen, he joined an artel, which is a group of artists working together. He later went to the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg. He did not pass his first test to enter. However, he did not give up on his dream. He moved to the city and took classes anyway. He eventually won gold medals for his skill.

Repin was born in a town called Chuguev. This town is in what is now Ukraine. His father was a soldier in the army. Later, his father sold horses. Repin grew up in a family of soldiers. He identified as a Russian from a place called Little Russia. This was the name for Ukraine at that time. He felt a connection to both the Russian and Ukrainian people. This background helped him understand the people he painted.

His career grew after a trip to the Volga River. He saw people pulling heavy boats. He made drawings of these workers. These drawings led to a big painting called Barge Haulers on the Volga. It was finished in 1873. This work made him famous all over the world. He also traveled to Paris and Normandy in France. There, he learned to paint outside in the fresh air. He studied how light and color look in nature.

Repin was part of a group called the Wanderers. These artists wanted to create a special kind of Russian art. They did not want to follow old, classic rules. Some of his paintings were very intense. One painting showed a king who had hurt his son. This caused a big scandal in the country. Later, Repin built a house in Finland. He called it "The Penates." This house is now a museum and a protected world site. He died in 1930 at the age of 86.
