He was a successful Russian businessman in Moscow. He helped start several large companies and banks. He also made a large fortune of 4.4 million rubles. This money came from things like houses and money bills. He used his wealth to become a famous art collector.

He wanted to build a special national gallery for Russia.

Tretyakov began his art journey in 1854 at age 22. His very first purchase was ten paintings by Old Dutch masters. He often bought art directly from artists' studios or exhibitions. Sometimes he bought a whole series of paintings at once. In 1874, he bought 13 pictures by V.V. Vereschagin. This set included 133 figures and 81 studies. In 1880, he also bought an Indian series of 78 studies. He even bought 102 studies by V.D. Polenov from his travels.

History shows how his collection grew very large over time. He focused on many famous Russian artists. These included names like Ilya Repin and Vasily Surikov. He also collected older Russian paintings and icons. He wanted to show how Russian art grew and changed. He even wanted to create a "Russian pantheon." This was a gallery of portraits of famous Russians. He asked artists like Kramskoi to paint these people. By 1892, he also added Western European art from his brother.

His collection became a very important part of Moscow. At first, the art stayed in his own house. He had an architect named Kaminski rebuild his house. He wanted to give the art to the city quietly. He did not want to be the center of attention. However, the gallery became very popular with many people. By 1885, about 30,000 people visited his collection. By 1890, up to 150,000 people visited every year. In 1892, he donated his many works to Moscow.

He and his brother Sergei supported a school for the deaf. This school was later named the Arnoldo-Tretyakov School. He even bought a large stone house for the students. He wanted to make sure they had good teachers. Even today, a small planet is named after the brothers. This honors the big impact they had on the world.
