He is best known for being a realist painter. This means he painted things as they truly looked in real life. He often used a regionalist style to show the land and people near him. He spent much of his time in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and Cushing, Maine. His art captured the feeling of these special places. He wanted to find a deep, spiritual meaning in the things he saw.

Wyeth had a very specific way of making his art. He often went on long, quiet walks to find new ideas. Before he started a big painting, he would make many small studies. He used pencils or light watercolors to practice his ideas first. He worked with different tools like watercolor and egg tempera. Egg tempera is a special paint made using egg yolk. He also used a style called drybrush, where he squeezed water out of the brush. This helped him show the textures of the world around him.

Art was a big part of Wyeth's family history from the start. His father was N. C. Wyeth, a famous illustrator who drew books like Treasure Island.

Because Andrew had frail health, he was taught at home. His father was the only teacher he ever had. These lessons helped him master drawing people and landscapes. In 1945, a sad accident took his father's life. This loss changed the tone of Andrew's art. His paintings began to feel more serious and even a little sad.

Wyeth's life was filled with important people and famous works.

In 1948, he painted his most famous piece, Christina's World. It shows a woman named Christina Olson in a large, dry field. He also painted the Kuerner Farm in Pennsylvania for nearly 30 years.

His wife, Betsy, was a huge help in managing his career. His son, Jamie Wyeth, also became a great artist. For his hard work, Andrew won the Congressional Gold Medal in 1988. He was also the first painter to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Many people recognize Wyeth's work because it feels very real and honest. Even though he was called a realist, he called himself an abstractionist. He believed that if you look closely at a simple object, you find a deep meaning. His paintings can make you feel the emotion of a place. You can see this in his work, Raven's Grove, from 1985.
