Chambers began his career by making beautiful art. He studied at the Art Students' League and later moved to Paris. From 1886 to 1893, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. He even showed his art at the Salon in 1889. When he returned to New York, he sold his illustrations to magazines like Life and Vogue. Later, he decided to focus on writing instead. He wrote his first novel, In the Quarter, while staying in Munich in 1887. This shift from drawing to writing changed his life forever.

His family history was quite interesting and long. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1865. His father, William P. Chambers, was a lawyer. His mother was Caroline Smith Boughton. His great-grandfather was a lieutenant in the British Royal Navy. His family also had roots in places like Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Some of his relatives were among the first settlers of Broadalbin, New York. This connection to New York stayed with him throughout his life.

Chambers was a very busy writer who wrote many different things. He wrote science fiction stories like In Search of the Unknown in 1904. That book included a story about a scientist meeting monsters. He also wrote historical novels about big wars. Some were set during the Franco-Prussian War, such as The Red Republic in 1895. Other books were set during the American Civil War. He even wrote books for children, like Orchard-Land in 1902. Some of his romance novels were even best-sellers.

Even though he died in 1933, his work still lives on today. He died three days after having surgery on his intestines. Many modern authors still look to his stories for ideas. The famous writer H. P. Lovecraft was a big fan of his work. Lovecraft even said Chambers's stories influenced his own famous tales. Today, many people still read his "weird fiction" to feel a sense of wonder. His stories continue to inspire new creators all over the world.
