He wrote stories about horror, fantasy, and science fiction. His work was built on a big idea called cosmicism. This idea says that humans are just a tiny part of a huge universe. He felt the universe was cold and did not care about people. This way of thinking helped him invent a new kind of scary story. Many people now see him as a very important author of the 20th century.

Lovecraft's stories often felt very real because of how he built them. He used science fiction and fantasy to show how fragile humans are. He liked to write about the decline of great civilizations. Many of his stories took place in a made-up version of New England. He used specific details to make his worlds feel dark and strange. Some of his most famous stories include "The Call of Cthulhu." He also wrote "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Shadow over Innsmouth."

His life began with both wealth and hard times. He was born on August 20, 1890, in Providence, Rhode Island.

His family was once quite rich, but they lost their money over time. His father, Winfield, was sent to a hospital in 1893. His grandfather, Whipple, became a very important person in his life. Whipple loved to tell weird tales to the young boy. These stories about winged horrors helped spark Lovecraft's own imagination.

Lovecraft had many struggles as he grew up. He went in and out of school due to health problems. He suffered from intense headaches and trouble sleeping. In 1908, he had a very serious health crisis. He also faced money problems after his mother was hospitalized in 1919. He moved to New York City and married Sonia Greene in 1924.

During this time, he became part of a group called the "Lovecraft Circle." They helped him get published in a magazine called "Weird Tales."

Today, many people still study and read his books. He was not very famous while he was alive. Most of his work was only in small "pulp" magazines. However, a big revival of his work started in the 1970s. His characters and ideas helped create the Cthulhu Mythos. This is a collection of stories that follow his themes. Many new writers and movies are still inspired by his dark worlds.
