Romance is a word that describes many deep feelings.

It often means a very intense attraction to one specific person. This state is commonly called "being in love." People experiencing this might focus all their attention on their partner. They may see their loved one as having extraordinary beauty or virtue. This can lead to an idealized view of the relationship. Some people believe in finding a "soul mate" or one true love. They may feel that this love will last forever and overcome any obstacle.

There are many ways to understand how romance works. Some people see it as a choice to marry for passion instead of practical reasons. Others view it as a strong emotional or spiritual attachment. In psychology, it is often seen as a special kind of motivation. This drive is different from the way we feel attached to family or friends. Some people experience very little romantic attraction and are called aromantic. For others, romance can even be "platonic," meaning it involves deep feelings without sexual desire.

The history of the word is quite long and interesting. It comes from the Latin word "Romanus," which means Roman. After the Roman Empire fell, the word "Romanice" described languages that came from Latin. In the Middle Ages, this became "romanz" in Old French. This term described both the language and the stories written in it. These stories were often about chivalry and love. They were called chivalric romances.

Many famous writers have explored these themes throughout time. French poets called troubadours wrote about unrequited love and the worship of a lady. In the town of Poitiers, Andreas Capellanus wrote "The Art of Courtly Love." This style of love elevated the status of women. Many famous stories follow this tradition, such as Lancelot and Guinevere or Romeo and Juliet.

Later, the modern romance novel emerged with writers like Jane Austen in the 18th century. Even modern stories like "Twilight" or "Star Wars" use these old ideas.

Science also studies what happens in the body during romance. It is linked to a chemical in the brain called dopamine. This chemical is part of the brain's reward system. It helps create "salience," which is a way of focusing attention on something important. Researchers like Bode and Kushnick studied this from a biological view in 2021. They found that romantic love is a state that helps with choosing a mate. It involves many different parts of the body, including genes and nerves.
