Couples take this trip to celebrate their new marriage. Today, many people choose exotic or romantic places to go. Some people use the term for a happy phase in a relationship. This phase happens before people get used to everyday life together. It can happen even if the couple is not married.

Every couple uses their honeymoon in different ways. For people in arranged marriages, it is a time to get to know each other. In some cultures, it is a time for the couple to become intimate. Other cultures use the time to relax and make memories. It also helps them adjust to life as a married couple. Some people now try a new trend called a "solomoon." This is a solo holiday taken without a spouse. It helps if a couple cannot agree on a place to visit.

This custom began in Britain during the early 19th century. Upper-class couples would go on a "bridal tour." They often traveled with friends or family members. They visited relatives who could not attend the wedding. This practice spread to the European continent soon after. In France, it was called an "English-style voyage" starting in the 1820s. Modern honeymoons became common during the Belle Époque in the late 1800s. This was one of the first times people used mass tourism.

The name "honeymoon" has many interesting possible origins. The word has been used since 1546 to describe a happy time. Some think it means the first month of marriage is sweet like honey. Another idea links it to the phases of the moon. One version says the word once meant love would fade like the moon. A 19th-century theory mentioned drinking honey drinks called Mead. This theory suggested people drank it for thirty days after a wedding. However, many people now challenge that specific theory.

Today, honeymoons are a huge part of wedding traditions. A 2023 report by The Knot found that 75% of couples take one. Honeymoons are most popular in European countries. In the United States, it is a 12 billion dollar industry. The average American couple spends about 4,500 dollars on their trip. In the 1980s, many Americans visited Niagara Falls. Now, air travel costs make other places more popular. A 2015 study showed that honeymoons may even lower the risk of divorce.
