In Western culture, people often wear them on the fourth finger of the left hand. This finger is linked to a famous belief called the vena amoris. This is a Latin term that means the "vein of love." People believed this vein led straight to the heart.

There are many different ways to make and wear these rings. Some rings are very plain, while others are bejeweled with bright gems. In the past, people used many creative styles. A gimmel ring had two bands that fit together like a puzzle.

During an engagement, the couple each wore one band. They joined them into one ring during the wedding ceremony. Another style was the poesy ring from the Renaissance era. These were silver bands with a short poem, or "poesy," carved into them.

History shows that rings have been used for a very long time. Ancient Romans and Greeks used rings during marriage ceremonies. In the Middle Ages, the way people exchanged rings came from European customs. Sometimes, rings were even used as a way to show money. In the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, a groom would give a purse of gold and silver coins. This was part of a marriage contract between two families. Even in the 1800s, some German formulas mentioned receiving a marriage portion of 1000 Reichsthalers.

Different countries have their own special rules for rings. In Sweden and Finland, both people wear rings on their left hands. In Germany, Austria, Russia, and Poland, people often wear them on the right hand. In the United States and Canada, it became common for both spouses to wear rings during the 20th century. During World War II, the United Kingdom had special rules for jewelry.

Today, rings connect people to their history and their families. In some ceremonies, a ring bearer carries the rings on a soft cushion.

In Romania, couples celebrate twenty-five years of marriage with silver rings. These are worn alongside their original gold rings. Some people must wear their rings on a chain around their neck. This is common for workers like police or electrical workers. Even if they do not wear them on their fingers, the rings still hold great meaning.
