This custom began in Britain in the early 1800s. Rich couples went on a bridal tour. They visited family members who missed the wedding. Later, this became a holiday for just the couple. This happened during the Belle Époque, a time in the late 1800s.

The name has many possible meanings. It may mean the first month of marriage is sweet like honey. Some think it refers to the moon. In the past, the word might mean love fades like the moon.

Today, the purpose of a honeymoon changes by culture. For some, it is a time to learn about each other. For others, it is a time to adjust to married life. Some people now take a "solomoon." This is a solo trip taken without a spouse. It helps if a couple cannot agree on a place to go.
