In some places, the gift is called a dowry. A dowry is often given to the bride. This helps her start a new home. In other places, the gift is called bridewealth. This is common in parts of Africa. In these areas, manual labor is very important. The gift helps the bride's family. It makes up for the loss of a worker.

These traditions have existed for a long time. The Babylonian Code of Hammurabi mentions bride price. In ancient Jewish law, a contract called a ketubah was used. This helped protect the wife. It gave her money if her husband died or left. In Islamic law, a groom gives a gift called Mahr. This gift belongs to the wife to keep. In parts of Papua New Guinea, these gifts can be very large. Some can even reach $100,000.
