Love is a very strong feeling of affection or attachment. It can be felt for a person, an animal, or even a thing. This feeling can be a simple pleasure or a very deep virtue. Some people see love as kindness and unselfish concern for others. Others see it as a moral flaw like being selfish. Love is a major part of how people build relationships. It is also a very common theme in art and stories.

Scientists study love by looking at how the brain works. One researcher, Helen Fisher, says love has three main parts. First is lust, which is a physical desire. This part uses hormones like testosterone and estrogen. Second is attraction, where you want a specific person. This stage uses chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals can make your heart beat faster and make you feel excited. This part usually lasts between one and three years.

The third part of this system is called attachment. Attachment is the bond that helps relationships last for many years. It uses different chemicals like oxytocin and vasopressin. This bonding helps people share homes and duties. Long-term relationships are often based on these deep ties. Some people also believe love is a choice. They say it is a series of loving actions over time.

Many thinkers have tried to define love throughout history. Ancient Greek philosophers identified six different forms of love. These included familial love, friendly love, and romantic love. They also named self-love, guest love, and divine love. In the 1970s, a psychologist named Zick Rubin studied love using math. Another thinker, Robert Sternberg, created a triangular theory. He said love is made of intimacy, passion, and commitment.

Love connects to many things we see in daily life. We might say "I love popcorn" to show a strong liking. We can also feel love for a cause or a goal. For babies, forming a close bond is a necessity for survival. This bond helps them grow up healthy and social. Even though love is hard to define, it is everywhere. It shapes how we live and how we treat each other.
