Compassion is a social emotion that moves people to help others. It is a feeling of sensitivity to the pain others experience. This pain might be physical, mental, or emotional. When we feel compassion, we want to make that suffering less severe.

Some people think compassion is the same as empathy. Empathy is the act of mirroring someone else's feelings. For example, you might cry because a friend is sad. Compassion goes a step further by adding a desire to act. It is often a key part of altruism, which is doing things to benefit others.

Scientists and thinkers look at compassion in different ways. One idea is that it has three parts: noticing, feeling, and responding. You first see the problem, then you feel for the person, and then you act.

Another way to look at it is through two types of timing. Proximal compassion happens right in the moment. This is like helping someone who just fell down in the street. Distal compassion is about looking toward the future. It is like a parent telling a child to wear a helmet to prevent harm later.

Many people throughout history have studied this feeling. The word comes from Latin and means "to suffer together with." This connects the word to "patient," which is someone who suffers.

Philosophers have debated if compassion is a good thing. Plato compared the human soul to a chariot. He said the intellect is the driver and emotions are the horses. He believed we must keep emotions under control. However, Immanuel Kant had a different view. He called compassion a weak sentiment and thought it should not occur among humans.

Compassion is also very important in many religious traditions. In Buddhism, it is the heartfelt wish to relieve the suffering of all beings. This wish must be paired with the courage to act.

Some people study how compassion works in the brain. Paul Ekman described different levels of this feeling. He mentioned global compassion, which is caring for everyone in the world. He also noted sentient compassion, which means extending care to other species. Even infants show signs of this by mirroring facial expressions.

While compassion is helpful, it can sometimes be hard on the person helping. People who spend a lot of time helping others may face compassion fatigue. This is also called secondary traumatic stress. It can feel like being very tired from caring too much.

However, new research suggests this happens when people lack distress tolerance. Learning to manage these feelings can help. Compassion helps us connect with people from different countries and cultures. It is a way to build a kinder world through understanding.
