Compassion is a complex social emotion that motivates individuals to alleviate the physical, mental, or emotional suffering of others. It is characterized by a sensitivity to the emotional aspects of another person's pain. While often used interchangeably with other terms, compassion is distinct in its focus on the desire to help. It serves as a precursor to empathy, which is the capacity to feel as another person feels. Unlike sympathy, which involves feeling towards someone with sorrow or concern, compassion responds with warmth and care.

To understand how compassion works, researchers often break it down into a specific process. An article in Clinical Psychology Review suggests that compassion consists of three distinct facets: noticing, feeling, and responding. First, a person must notice that suffering is occurring. Second, they must feel an emotional connection to that suffering. Finally, they must respond with an action intended to be helpful. This process is not just about wishing for things to change. It involves a motivation to do something to make the situation less severe.

Psychologists distinguish compassion from several related concepts. Empathy is the visceral or emotional experience of another person's feelings, such as mirroring a friend's sadness by tearing up. Altruism refers to an action that benefits someone else, though it may not always be driven by compassion. Compassion specifically involves the emotional response of perceiving suffering combined with an authentic desire to help. Furthermore, compassion can be categorized by its timing. Proximal compassion occurs in the moment, such as helping someone who falls in the street. Distal compassion involves social forecasting to prevent harm before it happens, like encouraging someone to wear a helmet.

The history of the word reveals its deep connection to human experience. The English noun compassion comes from Latin, meaning "to suffer together with." The prefix "com-" means "with," and the segment "-passion" comes from the Latin word for suffering. This makes the word related to "patient," which refers to one who suffers. Throughout history, many major religious traditions have ranked compassion as one of the greatest virtues. In Buddhism, for example, compassion is defined as the heartfelt wish to relieve the suffering of all beings, paired with the courage to act.

Philosophers have long debated the role of compassion in human morality. Plato compared the human soul to a chariot, where the intellect acts as the driver and emotions are the horses. He believed life was a struggle to keep these emotions under control. In contrast, Immanuel Kant viewed compassion as a weak or misguided sentiment, calling it "soft-heartedness" that should not occur among humans. Some historians argue that the absence of compassion contributed to massive atrocities, such as the Holocaust or European colonization. In these cases, victims were often defined as "not human" to remove the impulse for compassion.

Psychologist Paul Ekman developed a "taxonomy of compassion" to describe its different levels. He identified emotional recognition, which is knowing how another feels, and emotional resonance, which is feeling those emotions. He also noted familial connection, global compassion for everyone in the world, sentient compassion for other species, and heroic compassion, which involves acting despite personal risk. Research also shows that compassion is linked to positive psychological outcomes. It is associated with increased mindfulness and better emotion regulation.

While compassion is generally a positive force, it can lead to challenges like compassion fatigue. Also known as secondary traumatic stress, this occurs when people spend significant time responding to information about suffering. Some researchers suggest this fatigue happens when there is a lack of suitable distress tolerance. Additionally, "pathological compassion" can result in negative effects like gullibility or a miscarriage of justice. Despite these risks, compassion remains a vital tool for connecting people across different cultures and locations. It helps build democratic societies by fostering identification with others.
