Love is a complex emotion involving strong attraction and deep emotional attachment. It can be felt toward a person, an animal, or even an object. This feeling covers a vast range of mental states. It can be a simple pleasure or a sublime virtue. Some see it as unselfish concern for the good of others. Others view it as a moral flaw like vanity or selfishness.

Scientists study love through various biological systems. Anthropologist Helen Fisher divides the experience into three distinct brain systems. The first system is lust, which is the initial sexual desire. This stage involves the release of hormones like testosterone and estrogen. It usually lasts only a few weeks or months. The second system is attraction, which focuses on a specific partner. This stage involves neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. These chemicals stimulate the brain's pleasure center. This can cause a faster heart rate and reduced appetite. This stage typically lasts between one and three years.

The third biological system is attachment. This system promotes long-term relationships that last for decades. Attachment is linked to higher levels of oxytocin and vasopressin. These chemicals help people share homes and parental duties. This bonding provides a sense of safety and security.

Psychologists have also created theories to explain how love works. Robert Sternberg developed the triangular theory of love. He argued that love consists of three components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy involves sharing personal details and confidences. Passion is the intense feeling found in infatuation. Commitment is the expectation that a relationship will be permanent. Different types of love result from different combinations of these parts. For example, romantic love includes both intimacy and passion. Consummate love occurs when all three components are present.

History shows that our understanding of love has changed over time. Ancient Greek philosophers identified six specific forms of love. These included familial love, friendly love, and romantic love. They also recognized self-love, guest love, and divine love. Modern authors have identified even more varieties. These include terms like unrequited love and companionate love. Some historians link modern romantic love to courtly Europe. This period occurred during or after the Middle Ages.

Philosophers have offered many different definitions of the concept. St. Thomas Aquinas defined love as willing the good of another. Gottfried Leibniz suggested love is being delighted by another's happiness. Biologist Jeremy Griffith calls love "unconditional selflessness." Some thinkers, like Erich Fromm, believe love is an action. Fromm argued that love is a conscious choice. It is a commitment to loving actions over a long duration. This view suggests that the feeling is less important than the action.

Love is also a biological necessity for certain groups. For infants, attachment theory explains the need for a primary caregiver. This close relationship ensures the infant's survival. It also helps them develop healthy social and emotional functions. This is vital during the ages of six months to two years.

Finally, love connects to many different fields of study. It is a central theme in the creative arts. It is also studied in anthropology, neuroscience, and biology. While it is difficult to define, love remains a major facilitator of human relationships. It helps keep human beings together against various menaces. It also helps facilitate the continuation of the species.
